Recognition of a Century of Impact
WINNIPEG, MB – April 17th, 2025, marked a momentous occasion for Providence University College and Theological Seminary as the Manitoba Legislature officially carried a resolution honouring the institution’s 100-year legacy. Brought forward by MLA Konrad Narth (La Vérendrye), the resolution celebrates Providence’s century-long commitment to faith-based education and the formation of leaders who have made a lasting difference in Manitoba and beyond.
Acknowledgement in the House
This marked the second time this year that Providence has been recognized in the Legislative Assembly. The first mention came on March 21st, when MLA Richard Perchotte (Selkirk) highlighted the centennial milestone during a private member statement. The continued recognition in the House reflects our institution’s enduring presence and influence within the province.
A Legacy of Growth and Service
The resolution traced Providence’s journey from its founding as Winnipeg Bible Training School in 1925 to its current campuses in Otterburne and downtown Winnipeg. It highlighted the institution’s growth in both academic scope and student impact, recognizing its expanding programs and the powerful role of alumni throughout the province and around the world.
Bipartisan Support
What made the April 17th resolution especially meaningful was the robust participation from members across party lines. MLAs Kelvin Goertzen (Steinbach), Carrie Hiebert (Morden Winkler), Shannon Corbett (Transcona), Rachelle Schott (Kildonan River East), David Pankratz (Waverley), and Jasdeep Devgan (McPhillips) all offered heartfelt reflections on Providence’s place within Manitoba’s educational landscape. Their contributions during the hour-long session underscored a genuine respect and esteem for Providence’s century-long achievements — across the political spectrum.
Looking Ahead with Renewed Hope
This unanimous and bipartisan recognition offers renewed optimism that the provincial government may act on Providence’s longstanding request to be formally designated a full university under Section 9.1 of the Advanced Education Administration Act. There is also hope that this spirit of cooperation may lead to an increase in Providence’s international student allocation — a vital step toward furthering our mission and reach.
A Moment of Encouragement
This legislative honour is a testament to the commitment and faithfulness of the Providence community — past and present. We invite our supporters to take pride in this historic moment and to watch the video recording above to see the resolution and remarks that affirmed Providence’s place as a pillar in Manitoba’s educational heritage.
