OTTERBURNE, MB — As part of its historic Centennial Campaign, Providence University College and Theological Seminary is launching its first major project: a transformational renovation of the Providence Athletics gymnasium aimed at revitalizing student life and bringing Providence Pilots athletics fully back home to campus.
The gymnasium renewal marks a significant milestone in Providence’s broader campaign, Faithful to the Mission: Holding Fast, Pressing Forward, a multi-phase initiative designed to invest in the institution’s future through campus revitalization, student support, spiritual formation, and long-term sustainability.
“For generations, Providence has shaped students academically, spiritually, and personally,” says President Kent Anderson. “As we look toward our next century, this campaign is about creating spaces and opportunities that will serve students for years to come. The gymnasium renewal is more than a construction project—it is an investment in community, student wellness, school spirit, and the future.”
This project falls within the campaign priority area of Revitalizing the Student Experience, which seeks to strengthen student life through improved facilities, expanded scholarships and bursaries, and investments in future-focused academic programs.
Providence has committed $1 million to the gymnasium renewal. Generous donors have provided an encouraging start, contributing more than $90,000 toward the project. This early support reflects the enthusiasm many have for restoring a space that has long been central to campus life. As work progresses, Providence welcomes alumni, churches, businesses, and friends to join in bringing this vision to life.
“Construction has progressed steadily because the need is real and the vision is clear,” said Vice President of Advancement Ron Hogue. “Now we’re inviting the community to help bring this project across the finish line. Every gift, regardless of size, will have an immediate impact and help ensure this renewed space serves students and southeastern Manitoba for today and tomorrow.”
Providence Pilots teams, for several years now, have competed primarily off-campus. The renovation will restore a key campus gathering space and bring Pilots home games back to Otterburne after a few seasons at the Niverville Community Resource & Recreation Centre (CRRC). The renewed facility will once again serve as a hub for athletics, campus events, and student engagement.
The project includes:
- Installation of a new shock-absorbing athletic floor system
- Expanded spectator seating and new bleachers
- Updated scoreboard and shot clock technology
- Improved basketball hoop systems for enhanced safety and functionality
- Modernized HVAC and ventilation systems
- New Providence Pilots branding, finishes, and visual enhancements throughout the space
“Providence Athletics has always been about far more than competition,” said Joel Coursey, Director of Athletics. “Our teams build leadership, character, resilience, and community. Bringing the Pilots fully back to campus creates an environment where athletes, students, alumni, and fans can rally together in a space that reflects the excellence and identity of Providence.”
The gymnasium initiative is also expected to strengthen recruitment and retention efforts by enhancing the overall campus experience for current and prospective student-athletes.
“The momentum we’ve already seen reflects a deep belief in Providence and its future,” added Hogue. “Every donor who contributes is investing in students, strengthening Christian higher education, and helping ensure that Providence continues to thrive. We are deeply grateful for the generosity already shown.”
Beyond the gymnasium project, Providence’s Centennial Campaign includes priorities focused on:
- Deepening spiritual formation opportunities
- Creating a more welcoming and accessible campus
- Expanding scholarships and bursary support
- Supporting faculty excellence and innovative programming
- Sustaining long-term institutional growth and operational strength
Future phases of the campaign envision additional campus improvements, including enhanced lighting, paved boulevards and pathways, accessibility upgrades, refreshed chapel spaces, and ongoing support for a campus pastor.
