Undergraduate Requirements

Manitoba High School Students

To be admitted to a three- or four-year degree program at Providence, you must have a Manitoba senior high school diploma, or equivalent, with 30 credits. Included in the 30 credits should be a minimum of five credits at the grade 12 level, with a minimum of three credits in university preparatory courses (A or S), including with an overall average of 70% and a minimum of 70% in English. We do not consider physical and health education, career education, applied design, skills and technology, and religious studies as academic courses. The prerequisite for all other programs is a certificate of graduation from grade 12. Final admission is reviewed and granted upon receipt of your official final transcript showing graduation date and meeting the minimum admissions requirements.

Other Canadian Provinces & Territories

You must have a full senior high school graduation certificate of standing with a minimum of five courses equivalent to Manitoba grade 12 courses. Included in the high school certificate should be a minimum of five credits at grade 12 level, with a minimum of three credits in university preparatory courses, including at least one English. If you have less than five credits, in your first two semesters you must complete six credit hours of Humanities, Social Sciences and/or Biblical and Theological Studies for each grade 12 course credit deficiency (determined by the Admissions Committee). Home School Students

To be admitted to a three or four year degree program at Providence, you must have a completed grade 12 high school certificate with at least five university preparatory credits. A recognized provincial or state program for home school education is preferred. Evaluation is done on an individual basis. If you lack the academic prerequisites noted above under “Manitoba High School Students,” you may still apply for admission. All applicants will be placed on probation for their first 30 hours of study. The prerequisites for all other programs is a certificate of graduation from grade 12.

Mature Students

Mature Students are those 21 years of age and over and admitted with less than a Manitoba senior high school certificate or equivalent, but mature students with equivalent experience are also considered. Mature Students are confirmed as Regular Students only after successfully completing (30 credit hours) of study at Providence University College. The academic prerequisite for admission to a three- and four-year degree program is a completed grade 12 high school certificate with at least five university preparatory credits. Students aged 21 or over who lack the academic prerequisites (listed above under “Manitoba High School Students”) may apply for admission. Entering mature students may be asked to provide a resume, certifications, or evidence of preparatory courses to demonstrate academic readiness to handle a university course load, as per the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

Non-Degree Students

Non-Degree Students are those who take courses at Providence but are not enrolled in a certificate, diploma or degree program. Non-Degree Students may take a full- or part-time program of studies and may take any course for which they meet the prerequisites. Non-Degree Students may fall in one of the following categories:

  • Visiting students are those from another institution who wish to take courses at Providence to be used towards their degree at their home institution. Visiting students are required to fill out the Non-Degree student application form and provide a Letter of Permission from the Registrar’s Office of their home institution, indicating courses approved to be taken at Providence.
  • Auditing students are those who wish to take courses at Providence for no academic credit. Auditing students are required to fill out the Non-Degree student application form.
  • Casual Studies students who are neither visiting nor auditing students are required to fill out a Non-Degree student application form. Proof of a completed high school graduation certificate may be requested prior to registration with the discretion of the admissions committee.
  • Pre-Requisite Studies students who do not meet admission requirements as noted under 2.1 may be eligible to take a course as a Non-Degree Students. Once conditions have been satisfied, applicants will be eligible for re-assessment to a degree program.

Non-Degree Students may take a maximum of 15 credit hours, after which a formal application for admission must be completed.

Transfer Students

A transfer student is a student who has attempted courses at another post-secondary institution. If the student has attempted 24 credit hours (8 courses) or more at another post-secondary institution, the admission decision will be based on the official post-secondary transcript. Full acceptance will be granted for CGPA of 2.0 out of a 4.0 scale, and a conditional acceptance for lower than CGPA of 2.00. If the student has attempted less than 24 credit hours, the admission decision will be based on the official high school transcripts.

Graduate Requirements

Academic Prerequisites

In addition to a completed application and references, you’re required to have an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. You must have attained a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4-point scale) in the last 2 full years of study (60 credit hours). Some programs may specify a higher GPA requirement or additional prerequisites, listed in the degree program descriptions. If you do not have a recognized degree you may qualify for admission as a Mature (over age 30) student or Non-Accredited Degree student.

Note: Particular prerequisites may be required depending on the program you choose. Please see the degree program descriptions in the Academic Catalogue.

Probationary Acceptance Students

Probationary acceptance may be offered to students who meet all admissions criteria except the entrance GPA requirement. Students with an entrance GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 may be considered but admission is not guaranteed. Probationary conditions will apply and will be assigned on a case-by-case basis by the Admissions Committee. Conditions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Enrolling in a certificate program in the first semester
  • Mandatory participation in tutoring services
  • Limited course load
  • Mandatory enrollment in assigned courses
  • Regular meetings with a faculty advisor
  • Completion of additional undergraduate credits prior to or concurrent with Seminary enrollment

Reassessment for Regular Student status and formal acceptance to a program will occur at least one semester after probationary conditions have been met.

Regular Students

All students who have met the entrance requirements are classified as regular students (probationary status not-withstanding). Those taking nine or more credit hours per semester are considered full-time; those taking fewer are considered part-time.

Mature Students & Non-Accredited Degree Students

If you haven’t obtained a Bachelor’s Degree you may be able to apply as a mature student. You must be at least 30 years old and be able to demonstrate academic aptitude through one of the following:

  • Submit an official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) score. Minimum scores of 153 in the verbal section and 4.5 in the analytical section are required. Providence’s institutional code for the GRE is 6585.
  • If you have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4-point scale) from another graduate institution you may be considered for admission if the other graduate institution is considered equivalent to Providence.
  • Submit an RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) portfolio for assessment. Fees apply.

If you have a degree from a non-accredited institution you can apply as a Non-Accredited Degree student. There is no age restriction.

Note: The Association of Theological Schools (ATS), our accrediting body, limits the number of students we can admit as Mature or Non-Accredited degree students, except in cases where students’ RPL portfolio or Non-Accredited Degree is determined to be the educational equivalent of an accredited Bachelor’s Degree.

You will be assessed according to program vacancies, and the merits of you application. If you’re entering the M.A. (Theological Studies) or the M.A. (Christian Studies) programs, you’re not eligible for Mature or Non-Accredited Degree status.

Special Students

Students who wish to take courses at Providence but are not ready to complete a full application at the time may submit an Special Student Application (see under Application Forms below) for special student status. Students can take a maximum of 15 credit hours of study after which, a full application to Providence Theological Seminary is required to take further classes. Students may take any courses for which they meet the prerequisites (students wishing to take Seminary courses must provide an undergraduate degree prior to registration).

Continuing Education Units

Some professional organizations require continuing education units to maintain credentials in the organization. Seminary courses can be taken for continuing education units. Students may request a transcript for the course that can be used as proof to the credentialing organization. Whether the course can be audited or must be taken for credit is up to the credentialing organization. Credit or audit fees apply, as well as a fee for an official transcript.

Auditors

Students auditing courses are not required to complete assignments or take examinations but may attend classes for their personal enrichment. Those who audit courses receive no credit, but must register and attend classes regularly if they wish the audited course to appear on their transcript. Changes from audit to credit or from credit to audit must be made during the first two weeks of the semester. Some courses may be closed to auditors. All audits are subject to the instructor’s approval. Please contact the Registrar’s Office for more information.

Providence warmly welcomes back students after breaks in their studies. Prospective students admitted to Providence who have not completed any courses within the past year can initiate their re-enrollment process by contacting the Enrollment Office directly. For students seeking to resume studies after a hiatus of one year or more, a formal online returning student form must be completed to evaluate any necessary adjustments to their previous academic plan. In all cases, students with post-secondary coursework taken at other institutions during their leave of absence are required to declare such courses and have official transcripts sent directly from those institutions to the Providence Enrollment Office for official record.

Financial Aid & Awards

From Academic Entrance Scholarships (AES), bursaries and government assistance, Providence offers ways for you to finance your education.

Apply before December 1st to receive a $150 EARLY BIRD BURSARY that can be applied towards your tuition! You must submit the online application and include your transcript to be eligible.

Application Checklist

Follow this application checklist to make sure you don’t miss a step.

Our early bird application deadline is JANUARY 1ST.

Complete the online application form, which includes: one reference contact, either your pastor, teacher, guidance counsellor, coach or employer, who has known you for at least three years. Your reference cannot be a relative. The application will ask you some questions so we can get to know you better. Questions about you, your career goal, hobbies/interests, your faith journey, why a Christian university education is important to you.

Once you have been granted admission, you will be able to apply online to live in residence if you choose to do so. Your acceptance email will give you details on how to apply for a spot in residence.

Official high school transcripts (or post-secondary transcripts if you are a transfer student) need to be directly mailed to us or emailed to info@prov.ca NO LATER THAN AUGUST 15TH. Note: The transcript letter or email must come directly from your high school or post-secondary institution. If you’re a student from a Manitoba high school, you can order a transcript online using this MB government webpage.

Pay a $300 deposit to confirm your admission and access course registration. This deposit is credited towards the first semester’s tuition payment and is refundable up to July 1st.

About Acceptance

Acceptance

High school students will be assessed based upon their high school grades as per our admission requirements. Transfer students with 24 or more post-secondary credits will be considered for admission based upon their cumulative post-secondary GPA. The Admissions Committee will review and consider all applications, references and records of academic performance for admission.

Conditional Acceptance may be granted when:

  1. a current high school student is anticipating graduation from high school and has submitted interim grades and current courses for evaluation;
  2. a student is lacking entrance requirements stated below;
  3. a student has graduated from high school achieving a mark of 67% or lower in high school English;
  4. a transfer student (≥24 attempted post-secondary credits) achieving a mark below 2.00 CGPA (out of a 4.0 scale);
  5. a mature student that does not meet admission requirements.

Conditional Acceptance students may be required to enroll in English Composition in their first semester, be limited to 12 credit hours in their first semester, meet with a tutor and/or will be required to attend Academic Orientation.

Final Acceptance may be granted to a student who is able to meet the entrance requirements. After all outstanding official final documents have been received and evaluated, the Admissions Committee will determine the conditions of final acceptance. Please note, applicants who fail to meet normal academic requirements will be assessed individually on their potential for success in university studies.
