Providence Pilots Launch Women’s Rugby

Feb 13, 2026 | Athletics, News, University College

OTTERBURNE, MB – Providence University College Athletics is excited to announce both the official launch of Women’s Rugby as a Providence Pilots varsity program and the hiring of Isi Masi as the program’s inaugural Head Coach.

Providence plans to begin competition in the Prairie University Women’s Rugby Conference (PUWRC) during the 2026–2027 season in Rugby 7s, with plans to expand into Rugby 15s in Fall 2027–2028. The phased rollout is designed to establish a strong foundation in recruiting, athlete development, and team culture while building toward long-term competitive success.

The current members of the PUWRC are, Brandon University, the University of Regina, the University of Saskatchewan, Mount Royal University, and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Upon acceptance, Providence would become the sixth member University of the PUWRC.

“Launching women’s rugby is an exciting moment for Providence Athletics,” said Joel Coursey, Director of Athletics. “Rugby brings together toughness, teamwork, and character – qualities that align closely with who we are as Pilots. Starting in 7s gives us a strong, competitive entry point in the PUWRC, and our plan to expand into 15s reflects our commitment to long-term program growth.”

Masi joins Providence with extensive experience as both a high-level player and proven program builder. Raised in Fiji, he played competitively through high school, continued in Division 1 rugby in Australia, and later competed in Manitoba while representing the province in competitions across Canada and the United States. He was part of seven Division championship teams with the U of M Wombats and Steinbach’s Eastman Warriors.

Beyond his playing background, Masi has built a strong reputation for grassroots development and leadership. As a rugby club president, he helped lead local program growth, contributed to a historic men’s premiership, expanded youth participation to more than 400 athletes over five years, and most recently launched a women’s squad of 20 players with many new to the sport.

“I am very excited about this opportunity and very honoured to help pilot the program at Providence,” said Isi Masi. “Rugby is a beautiful sport, and I believe it builds connection, character, and community.”

“One of my coaching philosophies is to win with confidence and lose with pride,” Masi added. “It’s about giving everything you have, representing your team with character, and growing through every result.”

Coursey said Masi is the right leader to shape the program from day one.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Isi Masi to Providence,” Coursey said. “Isi brings a strong blend of high-level rugby experience, grassroots development success, and faith-centered leadership. As we launch women’s rugby, we’re building more than a team – we’re building a culture that develops students as athletes, leaders, and people of character.”

The addition of women’s rugby reflects Providence Athletics’ continued commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for student-athletes to compete at a high level while growing in leadership and Christ-centred character. Providence will continue to share updates on recruiting, program milestones, and preparations for PUWRC competition as the launch approaches.
