AIM HIGHER at Providence: Meet Bekah

Apr 14, 2026 | Institution / General, University College

As part of our spotlighting of recent graduates who are either working in their field of study or pursuing graduate-level education, throughout the coming year we will be continuing to feature the different programs that we offer at Providence through our Aim Higher portal.

One of those degrees is the BA in Sociology, which focuses on how systems of power, policing, politics, religion, law, and media influence society and experiences of social standing – leading students along a path of discovery related to understanding the social circumstances and reasons for crime, poverty, extremism, and more.

Providence Graduate: Bekah

Graduation Year: 2021

Current Role: Housing Program Supervisor

In Bekah’s Own Words: “My time at Prov was more than just an academic journey – it was a transformative experience that shaped how I think, relate to others, and approach my work today. My coursework in Sociology challenged me in ways I didn’t anticipate…it pushed me to critically examine the world around me, but mostly importantly it allowed me to reflect on my own beliefs and assumptions. As a student, I had relatively fixed beliefs and opinions on social issues that were shaped by my upbringing and experiences. Through classes that examined inequality, systems of power, identity and culture, I started to see the complexity and nuance in people’s lived experiences. I learned to sit with the discomfort as I was faced with a world of opinions and perspectives that went against what I was a hard-set believer in. From this experience grew some of the key values that ground my practice: empathy, curiosity, and respect for personal autonomy. The Sociology faculty played a significant part of my academic journey – modelling what it means to be intellectually rigorous and deeply compassionate. Their mentorship showed me that education is not just about acquiring knowledge, but growing as a person. For me, Prov was much more than just getting a degree. It truly shaped me as a person and has allowed me to have a very strong foundation in the work that I do today. While working with individuals with complex mental health and addictions, I am able to be a professional support utilizing a trauma-informed, person-centered approach.”
