Providence professor speaks with CHVN about “collective identity” of #WPGWhiteout

May 7, 2018 | Institution / General, News

Last week, ahead of Game Four between the Winnipeg Jets and Nashville Predators, Providence professor Dr. Dennis Hiebert chatted with CHVN 95.1 about the Jets’ play-off run, the #WPGWhiteout events and the sociology of sports.

“The Jets right now allow us to don the very same jerseys, and look alike, and cheer for the same thing, and it unites us, gives us a collective identity that our culture otherwise lacks,” said Dr. Hiebert, Professor of Sociology at the Otterburne, M.B. campus.

Winnipeg lost 2-1 that night, but more than 18,000 people came together to watch the game in the downtown party zone. After winning 6-2 in Nashville they have a chance to close out the series on Monday in Game Six, and an estimated 23,000 fans will enjoy the event as a group outside.
