Prov alum helping provide eyeglasses in developing world

Sep 24, 2018 | Institution / General, News

Greg Wiens, who graduated from Providence with a B.A. in Biblical & Theological Studies in 2005, is working to ensure affordable eyeglasses are available in the developing world.

Having learned about the Global Vision 2020 initiative while reading an issue of National Geographic nine years ago, Wiens, from Glenlea, MB, connected with organizational head Kevin White, a former U.S. Marine.

“It’s sort of like binoculars,” says Wiens, describing White’s invention. “You put it on your face, dial it in and it finds your prescription. And then we take that prescription and find the corresponding lends with pre-made lenses and frames and snap the lenses into place. The glasses are ready to wear in under 10 minutes. And, it costs about $3 (U.S.) to make these glasses.”

Wiens’ story was recently told by Steinbach Online. Read the full article.
