David Dueck, Honorary Doctorate and Providence Friend passes away

May 9, 2019 | Institution / General, News

A great friend of Providence, David B. Dueck, passed away suddenly on May 5, 2019.

“When I visited them at their home, I always left greatly encouraged,” says President David Johnson. “They were very faithful in prayer for our mission.” David and his wife Toni attended many Providence events, including graduation ceremonies.

In 2008, Providence conferred an Honorary Doctor on David. He was very happy to be associated with Providence through this distinction. Among other activities, David produced films about Mennonite history, including And When They Shall Ask (1983).

David and Toni’s children, Conrad Dueck (MDiv 2004) and Sonia Hiebert (1994), are both Providence alumni, as well as Sonia’s husband Lyndon Hiebert (BA 1996). Toni sat on the Providence Board of Governors from 2009-2015.

The funeral is on Friday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, with a visitation on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street.
