OTTERBURNE, MB – Figuring out what to do with the rest of one’s life as a young adult can be intimidating, especially when there are so many options – from traditional professions to innovative start-ups. But perhaps the proverbial question of “what do you want to be when you grow up?” is becoming increasingly less relevant, since working the same job for decades simply is not as common as it used to be. In fact, the number of people changing careers multiple times over their adult lives is significant. That being said, more often than not it’s worth considering a program that’s applicable across vocations. This is true of Providence’s programs at the Buller School of Business, and Genadyne Charr has definitely proven the versatility of a Business Administration degree.
“In high school, I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do, and then I heard about Providence. I used to attend their summer sports camps, and found out that I was able to pursue basketball and education at the same time. I actually started out in psychology, but soon realized that the business program was where I would be better suited – where I could use the gifts that I’ve been given.”
After graduating from Providence, Genadyne worked in sales for various professional sports teams, at a major tech company, and is now employed as the Associate Director of Business Development at a leading business school in Ontario. In her current role within higher education, Genadyne has been able to apply her undergrad learning and life experience to this new context of working with executive leadership teams.
“It really comes down to understanding how businesses work, and being able to ask the right questions that matter to the people who need to get things done. The time that I spent at Providence was very practical and group-oriented, which allows you to learn things like time management, how to work with people who share different perspectives, and knowing that there’s a flow and repeatable process to business.”
Genadyne’s time at Providence not only prepared her with transferrable skills for navigating real-world business situations, but provided a unique community experience with classmates and professors who were personally invested in her success and development – something that she is able to integrate into her work in mentoring future leaders like herself.
“Spend time doing what you are good at, what brings you joy, builds your confidence, and shows you the next steps toward other things that will add to your future. The path that I’ve taken is not a straight line, but a constant is my ability to communicate, ask questions, and to want more for myself and the people around me.”
Regardless of what career (or careers) one might be considering in the future, a great place to start would be to consider a Business Administration degree. From commercial businesses to non-profits, NGOs to working in the provincial or federal government, and small businesses to multi-national corporations, consider the Buller School of Business as the next step on your journey – like Genadyne.
