Indigenous Certificate
The INDIGENOUS IDENTITY, LEADERSHIP AND RECONCILIATION CERTIFICATE is for students interested in developing strong Indigenous leadership skills, both to work within and outside their community.
By building a base that strengthens knowledge of ones history, identity, and connection to the land, students will, through mentoring, hone culturally-informed leadership skills to become wise, impactful leaders ready to serve their community and beyond.
Building on Community History and Identity
Students will work in context, with the input of Knowledge Keepers, to learn from the past and lead their communities compassionately. Practical communication skills in all their forms will be developed to engage with various communities. By taking time to understand who they are individually, relationally, and spiritually, students will build an empowered sense of self and become leaders who lead confidently. They will engage with the broader community to bridge cultures and work towards truth and reconciliation – building the strength of history and identity.
Mentored/Work Integrated Learning
Providence offers this through our Centre for On-Demand Education and its competency-based educational approach. An Indigenous community member will serve as a contextual mentor, and Karen Jolly will serve as an academic mentor. The student will be given opportunities within the community to develop leadership skills as they work through the tailored curriculum.
Supported Learning
This is a small certificate. It is intentionally designed so that a more extensive educational offering will not daunt students who may typically shy away from higher education. We desire that this certificate will be a stepping stone for the student to take further courses/degrees as they build their confidence through this mentor-supported model. The student will work at their own pace through the curriculum, demonstrating proficiency and moving forward confident in themselves and what they can do.
