Providence Stories

TODAY, we’re sharing stories from Providence that tell of what your donation can do throughout the year in support of students’ growth and development – both spiritually and academically.

We see the quality of our professors at work in and out of the classroom. We are encouraged by the students who come to Providence to take our programs. We believe these stories will inspire and remind you that it takes all of us to make a positive impact in our communities, across the country and around the world.

ACADEMICS

Quality Education

For over 100 years, Providence has delivered faith-based, academically rigorous education, and at the heart of the institution are its esteemed faculty. As it was written in what would eventually become our Eye Witness magazine back in 1952:

“The soul of an educational institution is its teachers. It is not fine buildings that make a school, not elaborate courses of study, not even a large student body, but the character and calibre of those who teach.”

Since the founding of Providence, this commitment to hiring qualified women and men to develop innovative programs has defined our identity and resulted in it becoming the foremost interdenominational post-secondary institution serving southern Manitoba and Winnipeg.

Today, Providence’s faculty continue to lead the way in their teaching, research, publication and public service, as highlighted in the “Faculty Dispatches” section of the latest issues of Eye Witness. Over the past year, Providence Seminary has also been taking select classes to Winnipeg as part of their satellite “Pop-Up Prov” initiative.

COMMUNITY

Personal Investment

A student’s time at Providence is more than just education – it’s about growing as an individual and belonging to something greater than oneself. Practicing life together is core to a learner’s experience, and there are many ways that Providence personally supports its students in community – intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and socially.

In addition to the academic services that are provided – such as advising, tutoring, and skills workshops – the Student Life department cares for those who study at Providence by organizing various extra-curricular activities, supplying student lounges, arranging professional counselling, and employing both a Faculty in Residence and a Campus Pastor.

For those who are interested in exploring and deepening their faith, there are also many opportunities to do so, with weekly on-campus chapel services, life groups, occasions throughout the school year to participate in spiritual practices (e.g. Day of Prayer), and involvement at local churches.

ATHLETICS

Competitive Sports

Providence is well known for our top-notch athletics programming – drawing students to the University College not only from within Manitoba, but also nationally and internationally. For five decades, the Pilots have competed at a varsity level in volleyball, basketball and soccer, and former Athletic Director and Sociology professor – Dr. Dennis Hiebert – founded what would eventually become the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

This year, Providence once again hosted the CCAA Volleyball Nationals, which drew teams from across Canada for the women’s championship games in Niverville. Like the 2025 men’s tournament, this was a great opportunity for our students to showcase their talent and for Providence to be recognized across the nation.

2026 is also an exciting year for Providence Athletics, as there are three brand new sports being launch this fall: Curling, Cross-Country Running, and Rugby.

CAREERS

Vocational Success

Top of mind for anyone considering post-secondary education is whether a degree will get them to where they want to be in life; that there will be a job in one’s future after graduation. Over the past few months and into the coming year, Providence has been featuring success stories of a number of students across programs in our Aim Higher campaign.

Whether one is interested in a career in Business, Biblical/Theological Studies and Humanities, Natural and Social Science, or Aviation, Providence has a fit for students that prepares them for both post-graduate study and employment in a variety of fields.

Learn more about the story of some of our featured alumni, such as Genadyne who graduated from Providence with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Buller School.
