GRADUATE CERTIFICATE FAQs
Get quick answers to the most common questions about Providence Seminary’s graduate certificates—from program structure and online learning to eligibility and how these certificates can count toward a future master’s degree.
What is a graduate certificate?
A graduate certificate is a short, focused program at the master’s level designed to help you develop specialized knowledge in a specific area of study. Providence Seminary’s certificates consist of six courses (18 credit hours) and can typically be completed in less than a year. They provide advanced academic training without the time or financial commitment of a full graduate degree.
What courses are mandatory?
Each certificate has a defined set of required courses tailored to its area of focus (such as biblical studies, counselling foundations, leadership, or theological studies). Most certificates include a combination of core courses and discipline-specific electives. You can view the exact course list for each certificate in the Providence Seminary Academic Calendar or on the individual program pages.
Are courses offered fully online?
Yes. Most graduate certificates can be completed fully online. Some programs may include an optional or occasional modular week on campus, but the majority of coursework is delivered through Providence’s flexible online learning platform—designed to fit the schedules of working professionals, pastors, and adult learners.
Am I eligible?
To qualify for a graduate certificate, you generally need an accredited undergraduate degree (any discipline) and the ability to meet Providence’s standard graduate admissions requirements (transcripts, references, etc). Certain certificates may have additional prerequisites depending on the subject area. Mature or ministry-experienced applicants may be considered for recognition of prior learning (RPL) on a case-by-case basis.
How can graduate certificates fit into an MA or MDiv?
Graduate certificate courses are transferable into many of Providence Seminary’s master’s programs. If you later choose to pursue an MA or MDiv, your certificate courses can typically be applied directly toward degree requirements—allowing you to start small while keeping the door open for future study. This makes certificates a strategic pathway for learners who want to “ladder” into a graduate degree over time.
“Auditing courses gives me fresh perspectives outside my usual bubble. Hearing from professors and peers in different ministry contexts stretches my thinking and sparks new ideas I can bring back to my congregation.”
– James Drieger, Lead Pastor, Blumenort
“These courses help me rethink how I approach ministry and explore new paradigms. Learning is ongoing for me, and Providence gives me the environment to keep growing.”
– Angela Lau, DMin Student; Former Pastor
