In their final matches before the start of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season, the Providence Pilots women’s volleyball team won all four of their contests at last weekend’s tournament at the Otterburne campus.
Despite being a pre-season event, the tournament drew scores of Pilots fans who cheered on their team over the course of the weekend. They had a lot to cheer about. By Sunday afternoon the women had defeated each of l’Universite de Saint-Boniface, Canadian Mennonite University, Assiniboine Community College and Red River College while dropping just a single set.
Fourth-year left side Shayna Staerk led the way with 32 kills and 20 digs during the tournament, and setter Sam Bridle contributed 99 assists and 14 digs.
“We are certainly hitting our stride at the right time,” remarked Pilots head coach Kyle Guenther. “As we head into the start of the MCAC season, and with the National Christian College Athletic Association Regional Championships under two weeks away, we are playing our best volleyball of the year.”
Next up for both the women’s and men’s volleyball teams is the MCAC home opener against CMU on October 27.
