Pilots season concludes with MCAC futsal play-offs

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

The curtain was drawn on the 2017-18 Providence Pilots season on Saturday when both futsal teams went out at the semi-final stage of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference play-offs.

Having rallied to secure the fourth and final play-off berth with a pair of wins the previous weekend, the Pilots men lost 7-4 to Les Rouges de l’Universite de Saint-Boniface in Brandon.

The women, too, were defeated by USB, although top-scorer Julika Phommarath scored six goals in the narrow 8-7 loss. Phommarath, who finished with 22 goals on the indoor campaign, was named to the MCAC Women’s All-Conference Team.

The Brandon University Bobcats prevailed 6-3 over USB in the men’s final while the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers beat Les Rouges 5-2 in the women’s match.

“I am really proud of our team. We fought to the very end,” said Pilots women’s head coach Tory Walker, whose side conceded the winner to USB with only four seconds remaining. “This group of players has shown a lot of growth throughout the year and I am so proud to be their coach.”

The 2018-19 Pilots season will begin with outdoor soccer in early September.
