Pilots Paige Heide is the MCAC Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 10, 2021
In a tight three-way battle for top spot in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) women’s soccer standings, Providence University College Pilots (PUC) Pilots won to keep pace with a standout performance from midfielder Paige Heide in week five competition.
The Pilots started the week early with their lone match as they won 6-0 over Canadian Mennonite University Blazers (CMU) on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 6. Heide had another strong game this season as she scored twice while also adding two assists for their fifth win of 2021.
The second year veteran has been a force in the middle of the pitch during this campaign as she has combined her scoring and playmaking prowess with being solid defensively. Heide is now tied for third in league scoring despite not playing at a striker or forward position.
PUC’s head coach Tory Walker commented, “Paige has been used in almost every position this year except goalie. Which as a coach is a dream, and also shows her understanding of the game of soccer. She currently has been moved to our midfield where she has made an immediate impact the past four games which has resulted in three wins and one loss.”
With the victory, Providence hold a 5-0-3 record and only four points back of #9 CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) ranked Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges (USB) for first place.
The Steinbach native and Science student at PUC has now had two multi-goal matches so far this season. For week six, the Pilots are back in action as the travel to play at Brandon Bobcats (BU) on Saturday, Oct. 16 and then back at home to play Assiniboine Community College Cougars (ACC) Cougars on Sunday, Oct. 17. Game time for both matches at 1 p.m. CT.
