Pilots Joel Dueck is the MCAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 24, 2021
What a battle for the top spot in the 2021 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s soccer regular season. Providence University College (PUC) Pilots secured two crucial victories in the final week to claim first place and a big contributor was midfielder Joel Dueck.
Province started the week with a hard fought 2-0 road win at Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Dueck played solid and was a key defensive player to thwart several scoring opportunities. He then was a big part on both sides of the ball as PUC won 4-1 over Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers on Sunday, Oct. 24. The Niverville, MB native scored the game-tying goal, played defence plus was involved in setting up the offence with his ball distribution.
Joey Passi, PUC’s head coach said, “Joel had a huge week for us. He was as usual solid in the middle of the park. He wins defensive duels, helps keep the ball, and is also good at getting some key shots at the top of the box for us. Against CMU, that came to fruition with a hard one time shot that tied the game for us.”
The first year player has been lean upon in the midfield and is one of 13 players for the balanced attacks Pilots that has scored so far this season.
The Bachelor of Business Administration student at Providence would like to be part of adding another MCAC title to the trophy case. The top seeded Pilots will play fourth seed CMU Blazers in one of the MCAC championship semi-final games starting at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 30 in Brandon.
