Basketball Alumni Weekend

Monday, September 24, 2018

The Providence basketball teams tipped off their season this past Saturday facing the best of the past Providence Alumni. The two games had awesome turn out by the alumni. Scott Masterson the athletic director here at Providence, had this to say about the event: “It is always great to see how many alumni continue to stay engaged with our program and who take time out of their lives to come back to campus. We had alumni from the U.S., and as far away as B.C., come out for the alumni basketball games. It’s great to provide an update, face to face, on how things are progressing with our teams and our program as well as what our focus and priorities continue to be. The more we can communicate our vision and mission, the more united we can be with our alumni. I know a lot of alumni valued their time at Providence for more than just the sport itself. They remember, and value, the relationships and the commitment of investing in their personal and faith development while they were students here. Of course, it is also great to hear their updates on what is happening in their lives now.”

The women’s side saw a score of 58-32 for the current Pilots team and first year guard Megan Wiebe lead the team with 15 points. Fourth year and Captain Alison Zajac had 13 points. Coach Joel Coursey said, “I was happy with how our team performed. I think we have lots to work on, but it was a strong showing for this early in the season. We will begin our non-conference play this Friday as we host St. Mary’s University. I expect the first month of our season to challenge and stretch our young roster.”

For the men’s game, it was a nail biter with a score of 78-76 for the current Pilots. Team captain Cash Blanca commented on the game, saying, “We may have been nervous early on. But as a team, our intensity picked up, showed composure, and played tough defence to pull of the win. Shout out to JT for that awesome buzzer beater.”
Pierre Dubreuil, head coach, said, “The score was tied all game long. Playing against the alumni team was definitely a great experience for the team as a first pre season game. After passing the stress and nerves of the first minutes, the team was able to play really good intense basketball. Everybody was on the same page and worked hard to keep the pace for 40 minutes. Being lead by Blanca and Lawson, our team captains, the team never gave up to win the game by 2 points in the last minutes.”
