2020 Outdoor Soccer Season Cancelled.
Providence Athletics is sad to announce that the 2020 outdoor soccer season has been officially cancelled.
The MCAC announced on Monday that the league has decided to agree upon cancelling the 2020 season due to the Winnipeg Health Region pandemic response level as it moved to code orange with a surge of Covid cases.
Head coach of Women's Soccer Tory Walker shared his thoughts on the news by saying, "Here at Providence we have been doing as much as we can to make this a safe place to play this year. Our teams have worked very hard to stick with the health guidelines and we are extremely sad that we cannot play this year. As the coach for the women's team I am happy that our team has come together so well this season and I was excited to see what we could have accomplished. Hopefully this group will stick together for next year and be a dominant team."
The MCAC originally moved the season back a few times this year to allow other MCAC members to participate in the season, but with more regions going to code orange the timelines to having games would not work as winter is fast approaching.
Head coach of Men's Soccer Joey Passi had this to say about the cancelling of the season, "It was obviously quite disappointing to hear that our season was going to end but we always knew that was a possibility. I was excited with the team we had and with the potential to display a quality product on the field. It's disappointing, but obviously there's bigger issues happening & hopefully these new precautions help lower the numbers across the Province. I'm thankful to the directors who tried to make a season happen despite the difficult conditions."
The soccer teams now shift their focus to the winter futsal season.
