SUMMARY:Seminary Symposium (Winter)
DESCRIPTION:Day/Time: Thursday\, March 20th @ noon to 1:30pm \nSpeaker: Layton Friesen\, Academic Dean\, Steinbach Bible College \nLocation: South Howison Room\, Student Life Centre\, Providence \nPresentation: “Harry Friesen Was Right: How Old-School Mennonite Non-Resistance Could Still Save Christian Ethics.” \nDescription: In this talk Friesen will make the impossible point that the old non-resistance that was abandoned in the 1950’s by all assimilated Mennonites in southern Manitoba had a spiritual furnace that no evangelism\, relief work\, social-justice warring\, militarism\, anti-bullying\, etc\, has ever managed to replace. By doing this\, he thinks he can demonstrate why modern ethics is so polarizing. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. Zoom option is also available. Registration is required for in-person or online attendance. \nREGISTER HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Seminary: Public Lecture (Chronicles of Narnia)
DESCRIPTION:“What Narnia Teaches Us About Being Mere Christians Today” \nIn this lecture\, we will consider how we can read C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia\, from a practical theological point of view. In an increasingly post-Christian age\, the Chronicles continue to gain popularity with each generation. Lewis believed that by visiting the imaginary Narnian world we could more clearly see what is going on in our world\, and what God is up to in it. From his many letters to children\, it is evident that he expected adults to use these stories as a primer for children to think through deep theological matters early in life. In particular\, the lecture will explore the ways in which the seventh book\, The Last Battle\, teaches us about how to live as mere Christians in our current cultural moment. \nPresenter: Dr. Dwain Tissell\, Western Seminary\, Portland \nLocation: Fourth Ave Bible Church\, 62 Fourth Avenue South\, Niverville / Zoom \nREGISTER HERE (in person or Zoom).

SUMMARY:Seminary: Public Lecture (Book of Job)
DESCRIPTION:“A Voice in the Whirlwind: Suffering and Hope in Job” \nThe book of Job tells the story of a righteous man who loses everything and his journey towards hope. It helps us grapple with many questions that arise when we experience suffering: How do we respond when everything in our lives is turned upside down? How do we make sense of grief\, pain\, and suffering? Is hope possible when everything seems lost? The book of Job offers us an up-close picture of righteous suffering\, the pain of accusatory friends\, and the hope of God’s presence in the depths of great loss. \nPresenter: Dr. Beth Stovell\, Professor of Old Testament (Ambrose Seminary) \nLocation: Maranatha Church\, 99 Main Street\, Niverville / Zoom \nREGISTER HERE (in person or Zoom).

SUMMARY:Seminary Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Imagining a Better Way: Towards a Theology of Transformative Preaching (Biblical and Theological Seminary Symposium) \nLocation:  South Howison Room\, Reimer Student Life Centre\, Providence Campus \nPresenter: Rev. Dr. Robert Dean\, Associate Professor of Theology \nResponder: Jordan Michalski\, Executive Pastor\, Soul Sanctuary Church \nBrief Description: Most agree that preaching should lead to transformed lives\, even if there is disagreement about what that may look like. But what if today’s preachers have been seeking that result in the wrong way? What if transformation is not found in the type of action-oriented preaching dominating contemporary pulpits which seeks to provide only biblical information\, dole out helpful tips and practical advice\, or serve as a cheerleader for the latest fashionable social cause? By contrast\, this presentation will argue that genuine transformation occurs as the sermon becomes the vehicle for the Holy Spirit’s conversion of the hearer’s imagination. This impacts both the posture of the preacher and the practices of Spirit-led congregations. \nClick on the button below to indicate if you are planning on attending in-person or online. This event is free of charge. Lunch will be provided\, sponsored by the Seminary. Online attendees will receive a link by email once they register. \n \n
