CESB ARTICLE

The Canadian government announced in April a number of federally-funded initiatives to help students pay for university or college in the fall. One of those initiatives is the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) which is aimed at helping students who are unable to find work due to COVID-19.

The CESB is for:

  1. post-secondary students
  2. recent post-secondary graduates, AND
  3. high school graduates who’ve applied to an university or college program that starts before February 1, 2021

Are You Eligible?

  • You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent residence to apply. CLICK HERE for more details.
  • If you’re already receiving the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) or Employment Insurance (EI), you are not eligible to apply.
  • You must be able to prove that you’re actively looking for work.
  • If you have a job, but are not earning over $1,000 per four-week period, you can apply.

Here’s what you need to know:

The CESB is available from May 10 until August 29, 2020 for post-secondary students and recent grads. And it’s available from July 5 to August 29 for most high school graduates.

CESB funding is as follows:

  1. $1,250 for each 4-week period, OR
  2. $2,000 for each 4-week period, if you have dependants or a disability.

We encourage Providence students to apply for this funding if you’re finding it difficult to find summer employment. It’s just one of the ways our government is helping you, as a student, to realize your plan and dream to attend an university or college in the fall. (Government bursaries and Canada Student Grants and Loans are also available to eligible students with special COVID-19 measures in place from March 30 to September 30, 2020.)
