The Providence Pilots men’s volleyball travelled to Saskatchewan and Alberta for a four-game preseason trip September 21-23.
In their first match against Caronport, Saskatchewan's Briercest Bible College they fell in three sets, losing 15-25, 18-25 and 26-28. A day later, however, the Pilots came out firing on all cylinders. They pushed Briercrest to the full five sets—even coming back to win the fourth—before coming up just short.
From there the team headed west and faced Medicine Hat College later the same day. Fighting off fatigue, they forced a decisive fifth set but lost 11-15. They were beaten in three straight to conclude the back-to-back series.
Despite the defeats, head coach Scott Masterson saw individual improvements from every player and an overall improvement in team play.
“Any small mistakes were taken advantage of by our opponents, and it was good for our guys to understand the importance of every touch,” he analyzed. “It also highlighted the areas of the game that we need to improve on most if we want to be successful this season. I was especially impressed with our first-year players. They experienced a very steep learning curve and I thought they handled it very well.”
Both the Pilots men’s and women’s volleyball teams will return to action on Friday, when they’ll compete in a tournament in Red Deer, AB.
