From the Coach: We had a very long stretch since our last formal match and so we were all very excited to play again. I was very pleased with how we played in both matches this weekend. The guys came out with a lot of intensity and focus and we played a pretty good level of volleyball. Friday night saw our team come out very well, executing at a high level. Our play dipped slightly in the first half of the second and third sets but we were able to lift our play at the end of each set. Saturday’s match was an incredible atmosphere. We played in front of a packed house and the energy was great. We had volleyball alumni on campus for the day and a lot of them stayed for our varsity games. Red River started strong with great passing and an effective attack. Our guys struggled a bit on serve receive and we had to really work hard to stay within reach. Down 16-20 in the first set, we made a late run to tie it up at 22-22 and then made another late run to take the set 25-23. It really showed some character to be able to stay focused in that environment, being down when we knew all the guys wanted to win really badly for their home opener. Once we won the first set, we really seemed to settle in and play more freely, executing well and competing hard for every point. In the end, we seemed to wear them down and were able to take the 2nd and 3rd sets more easily. This was a great way to start our season but we know that we still have a lot of work to do if we want to be competitive with some of the top teams in the conference.

Player's View: “We had a great opening weekend! Both games we all played very well, with a low number of unforced errors and very high side out percentages. The team had lots of fun and everyone played great. It was nice to start the season with a couple of wins and finally see all of our hard work in practices pay off.” Brett Foley (3rd year; co-captain)
