The Providence Pilots men's volleyball team won a double header at home against the visiting Assiniboine Community College Cougars last weekend.
In their first match up, despite the Pilots’ slow start, dropping the first set. 23-25, they shook off the rust from not playing for two weeks, and won the next three sets 25-20, 25-15, 25-11.
In Saturday’s game, the Pilots came out in full force and swept ACC in straight sets 25-10, 25-18, 25-19.
Throughout both contests, Matt Friesen led the way with 30 kills and 16 digs, and star setter Lucas Pappel produced 69 assists.
Head coach Scott Masterson praises his team’s efforts in getting two crucial wins. “The guys came out with great focus and execution and really dominated from start to finish” he states. Masterson also highlighted the full team effort of his team, both first and second string players. “I wanted to show our 2nd string players that we had confidence in them to pull us out of that situation and they were able to respond and show that this confidence was not unfounded” he exclaims.
Providence is currently 6-0 to start the season and have two big matches left before the Christmas break. A win against CMU on Friday will solidify them 1st place spot where a loss will put the two Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference league leading teams in a tie.
