Pilots basketball tipped off their season this week as the men played two away games and the women’s had a home game.
The men’s basketball team played Briercrest College and lost a close game 77-71 last Thursday night. On Saturday they were back at it playing a strong St. Mary’s university and lost a second close game 93-81. Team captain Chris Dick had some positive things to say about the two games, he said, “This week the men’s basketball team battled with two tough opponents from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. Both games were hard fought, but the size and experience of the visiting teams helped them get the edge as the Pilots lost two close games.” Even though the outcome isn’t what they were hoping Chris said, “There were some great takeaways, and the team is going to learn from these games and bounce back for their upcoming games against MCAC/NIAC competition.”
On the women’s side the team played St. Mary’s university at home and came out with a hard fought game losing 69-42. Taylor Goodbrandson and Alison Zajac lead the Pilots with 11 points each. Head coach Joel Coursey commented on the game saying, "St. Mary's is a great team and will likely do really well this season as they look to repeat the championship run of last season in the ACAC. I was happy with my teams ability to keep competing for the full 40 minutes despite being down early. We are aware of the areas that need improvement and games like these help to illuminate those areas. We have two weeks to toughen up and prepare before we face Mayville State."
The men’s basketball team will play in a few exhibition games this weekend in Winnipeg.
