In their weekend double-header at home, the Providence Pilot’s futsal teams had split results, both beating the Red River College Rebels on Friday and then losing to Les Rouges de l’Universite de Saint-Boniface on Saturday.
Against the Rebels the Pilots men seemed well-matched both offensively and defensively. However, with the game tied 5-5 with less than a minute remaining in stoppage time, Johnny Fulford delivered a cannon of a shot that delivered the points to the Pilots. Facing Les Rouges, Providence found themselves in foul trouble and a man down following a red card. Nevertheless, they fought until the end and were edged 6-5.
On the women’s side, the Pilots dominated the Rebels. Led by Julika Phommarath’s hat-trick, the hosts cruised to a 5-3 win. Then, like the men, they lost to Les Rouges by an identical scoreline. Phommarath, however, notched a brace in the defeat.
“We have a lot of character in our teams,” remarked women’s head coach Tory Walker after the Red River match. “I expect we will respond and come out with some big performances next weekend.”
Next up for the Pilots is a double-header this weekend in Brandon against the Assiniboine Community College Cougars.
