The Providence Pilots men’s futsal team will be facing familiar foes this weekend as the Pilots face the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers in a rematch of the MCAC Outdoor soccer semi-final.
It seems fate is creating an intense rivalry this year for the two clubs, as they are yet again playing in a semi-final against each other, this time for futsal. The Pilots who are the #3 seed look to get revenge on the Blazers.
Head coach, Joey Passi had this to say about the season and match up this weekend, "Every single futsal season we have been slow starters. Every single season, we get our butts handed to us a couple times before we get our act in gear. This year is was no different. If anything, this season has been tougher since we really didn't have any natural futsal players and have worked hard on developing the skills needed to succeed at futsal. And to be honest, the boys have really come through and have progressed immensely. If we were playing this game at the beginning of the season with CMU, we would have had zero confidence. Now? While still respecting an organized and obviously skilled team, we are pumped and looking forward to playing them. We are going into this game with confidence, and we're looking forward to this weekend. I'm proud of how far the boys have come."
Team leader Johnny Fulford echoed coach Passi’s comments by saying, “Our team has come a long way throughout the futsal season. With only a few players ever playing futsal before, this season could not have prepared us more for the real season - where it matters most - playoffs. Despite our record in comparison with our opposition's, we do believe that we have the ability on our team to thrive and win. This weekend is going to be spectacular."
The Pilots play on Saturday, March 9 at 5:00PM at Red River College, Notre Dame Campus. Come out and support your Pilots.
